An NHL numbers jersey is a hockey jersey with a player number on the back and sleeves, and usually a name across the shoulders. Fans pick one to wear their favorite player’s number, their own lucky number, or a number that means something to the family. This guide explains how numbers work in the NHL, what you can put on your own jersey, and how to order it right the first time.
How it Works NHL Numbers Jersey
In the NHL, every player on a team wears a different number, so officials, broadcasters and fans can tell players apart. A few things are worth knowing:
- Players wear 1 to 98. The number 99 is retired across the whole league in honor of Wayne Gretzky, and 0 and 00 are no longer allowed for players.

- Some numbers are retired by a team. When a team retires a number for one of its greats, no other player on that team wears it again.

- Numbers carry history. Fans connect numbers like 87 with Sidney Crosby, 66 with Mario Lemieux and 4 with Bobby Orr, which is why player numbers are the most popular choice on fan jerseys.

These are the league’s rules for players. Your own jersey doesn’t have to follow them.

Your Jersey, Your Number
On a My Size Jersey hockey jersey you choose the number and name, with no league limits:
- Any number of digits. Two digits are the most common, but three and four digit numbers are fine, so a birth year, a street number or “617” for Boston works.
- Any name length. Long names are no problem, and double nameplates are possible too.
- Player or personal. Order a player’s name and number, or put your own name and your own number on your team’s jersey.
A few ideas fans like:
- Your favorite player’s name and number, like the Pittsburgh Penguins Light Blue #87 Sidney Crosby Jersey
- Your family name and a number that matters to you, like a birthday or anniversary year
- A city number, like the 617 on the Bruins Boston Strong 617 Black Hockey Jersey
